What are the styles and benefits of double glazing replacement windows?

Although double glazing replacement windows have been around for 80 years the introduction of UPVC / PVC-u frames has changed the style, and the benefits including the affordability and the energy saving capabilities.

Double glazing is, in simple terms, two layers of glazing, separated by an air space for thermal and acoustic insulation. Today it usually supplied as a sealed unit, set in hardwood, aluminium or UPVC frames.

When UPVC / PVC-u frames were first introduced the nearly always tended to be white but as the technology has become more sophisticated and as demand and popularity has increased so the choice has increased. These ranges are now also offered in ranges of colours and are even offered in very realistic Woodgrain effects so that they can sit perfectly comfortably in period style properties.

Even the glass has changed with the introduction of tinted glass, coated glass and low emissivity glass and maintaining pace with the public regard for energy savings and increased efficiencies, many suppliers offer energy efficient systems.

With a market size estimated at over £4bnpa in the UK, it is probably not too surprising to learn that most of the leading suppliers and manufacturers try to accommodate almost every style of window such as casement windows, sash windows, tilt and turn to bay windows. The installation of replacement double glazing into a property can make such a difference from complementing the style and elegance, to adding a new dimension (when say a casement window is replaced by a bay window) to helping reduce heating costs, and has the added benefit that it, more often than not, increases the value of the home.

So what are the different window types from suppliers in Devon?

Casement windows open like a door – either left-hand or right-hand opening, and usually will open away from the house. This is what most of us think of as a “standard” house window unless thinking of period properties. Casement windows give unobstructed views and allow lots of light in to the room. The design lends itself to additions such as leaded to lights or perhaps coloured motifs or patterned glass as interesting design features.

Sash windows or sliding sash windows have been around for almost 400 years and were commonly installed into Edwardian, Georgian and Victorian houses. Commonly the arrangement was three panes across by two up on each of two sashes, giving what is known as a “six over six” panel window, but there were no specific fixed rules. The modern double glazed sash windows does not suffer the same problems as the originals which tended to stick and rattle and also needed weights and cords in order to operate the windows.

Bay windows

Bay windows add a whole new dimension to a house and give a genuine feeling of additional space from within a room. Bay or bow windows can often leave room for a window seat or a platform for plants etc.

Bay windows were traditionally three windows joined together whereas traditionally a bow window consisted of four or five casement windows forming a semicircle.

Bay windows off themselves perfectly as a really attractive design feature in many homes and are ideal at making a small space appear larger than it actually is.
There tend to be any options offered with double glazing companies for these ever popular windows which include;

  • Square
  • Round
  • Angular
  • Sash box

Almost all companies offer a good range of glazing options also for double glazed replacement bay windows including:

  • Georgian bay window glass
  • Leaded bay window glass
  • Coloured motifs
  • Crystal classics
  • Pilkington texture glass

Tilt and turn windows are a fairly modern invention and were designed for very practical reasons. They are particularly useful where it is not practical to open the windows outward such as perhaps a ground floor opening onto a pavement. They are an inward opening window usually with a dual function handle which allows the “tilt” for secure ventilation, the “turn” for cleaning, and excellent ratings for fire egress.

  3. A more comfortable home.
  4. Peace and quite through sound insulation.
  5. Low maintenance especially with UPVC options
  6. Reduced condensation.
  7. Added value to the home
  8. Easier to sell the home / prestige.

Devon – Did you know…?

There is some dispute over the use of Devonshire instead of Devon, and there is no official recognition of the term 'Devonshire' in modern times. Theories have included that the 'shire' suffix is due to a mistake in the making of the original letters patent for the Duke of Devonshire, resident in Derbyshire. However, there are references to 'Defenascire' in old English texts from before 1000AD, which translates to modern English as 'Devonshire'. The term Devonshire may have originated around the 8th century, when it changed from Dumnonia to Defensascir.

Devon has produced tin, copper and other metals from ancient times. Devon's tin miners enjoyed a substantial degree of independence through Devon's stannary parliament, which dates back to the twelfth century. The last recorded sitting was in 1748.
